Model-Glue: What the hell is autowiring?

Scott Stroz dropped me an IM yesterday asking "What the hell is autowiring?" It's a pretty good question, and one that I haven't done a good job explaining.

So, here we go: the evolution of autowiring.

Rob Gonda's Ajax + Push in Model-Glue

Wow - this is pretty slick. By using his AjaxCFC, an event gateway, and a tiny Flash movie as a conduit, Rob Gonda has come up with a way to do *push* in Model-Glue via Ajax. That...is...pretty...slick!

ColdFusion vaults on the Tiobe index

The Tiobe index isn't the most accurate way to judge a programming language's place in the market, but it's an interesting way to eyeball community interest. ColdFusion went from #26 to #13 in the past year! (Java = #1, C = #2, C# = #7, VB.NET = #20, Ruby = passing fad (sorry, I had to, it's probably not, but I thought it'd make someone chuckle))

(Oops, forgot the link the first time, thanks, Ryan!)

Sean Corfield on Model-Glue, Reactor, and ColdSpring

Sean's written up an entry talking about his experiences using Model-Glue with Reactor and ColdSpring. I've been using these same three recently, and it's been a good experience.

Each framework is dedicated to its task and doesn't try to go outside of its domain - when combined, things seem to just work.

Read more about Sean's experience over at his blog.

Mission: Clayton - Forward Recon Point Established

In preparation for the impending invasion of Clayton, NC by Doug Hughes, I've established a forward recon point across the street from his intended base of operations.

Last weekend, my wife and I deployed all of the necessary materials for long-term occupation of the Clayton Forward Recon Point to said point (read: we moved everything we own except some clothes, a few laptops, and our dog to our new house). Upon deployment of said materials, we returned to the Northern Virginia area for a series of operations over the next nine days. Long term occupation of the Clayton Forward Recon Point will being 8 March 2006.

Updated intelligence photos may be found in the new photo dossier.

Windows Live! Blows it Again

Microsoft has unveiled "Windows Live Local" (Virtual Earth Technology Human Eye XP Not-Quite-Professional-But-Better-Than-Home 2006 Edition), which appears to be their stab at the Yahoo! / Google maps RIA.

It's absolutely horrible. If you don't believe me, feel free to try it at http://preview.local.live.com/.

The screen is horizontally split into two regions. The bottom displays a little car and a map. You can drag the map - sometimes. Just don't get the cursor too close to the car before you click. If you click the car you'll be able to drag it around on the map - sometimes. Sometimes it rotates the car instead. I'm not sure why.

The top half is where it gets wacky. Someone took a lot of time grabbing still frames from a video of driving around the city, because it tries to show you what you'd see out of the car's window. Ok, that's neat, but:

1. The graphics are cheesy, and look like they're from the 1993 edition of Need for Speed 2.0.

2. Why would I use this if I needed to find a place? The map is so small it's unusable, and the UI is clunky.

3. It's such dizzying experience that I get a headache after using it long enough to blog it.

I think someone at MSFT needs to get beaten with the KISS principle.
